What can we say about January 7, 2010 that hasn't already been said? Not much. Doesn't make us think about it any less. Doesn't lighten the load of remembering. Doesn't convince the bus driver to go park somewhere else. It still pretty much sucks.
So what I'd like to do on this third anniversary of Charlotte Jennie's metamorphosis is to offer you music that reminds me (Daddy) of her.
The Great Remember from the CD Rare Bird Alert is the latest tune that has her spirit all over it. The moment I saw this video of Steve Martin playing his original clawhammer banjo composition during his tour with the Steep Canyon Rangers, I thought of her. It has a beautiful, yearning melody and yet there are still wonderful elements of Martin's humor as he tunes before he plays.
Radiance is a vocal version of a Keith Jarrett improvisation recorded by Julia Dollison and Kerry Marsh. I believe Kerry's sister put together the video slide show. It's heartbreakingly beautiful and very difficult for me to watch.
Charlotte certainly loved Dora The Explorer. She learned several Spanish words and phrases watching Dora and after her first surgery, when she started being able to speak, she counted to 10 in Spanish for us. It meant an awful lot to hear her do that.
The Chanticleer version of Franz Biebl's Ave Maria is another heartbreakingly beautiful piece and I can't hear it without thinking about Charlotte and becoming a blubbering mess. (The link comes complete with fireplace)
I believe someone introduced us to "Two Thumbs Up" by Johnny Bregar after Charlotte died or near thereabouts. It has become one of our official theme songs and Johnny has been tremendously generous to give us permission to do pretty much whatever we want with his recording. We promise not to abuse that trust.
Here's another song that someone sent to us after Jan 7, 2010. It's Jonatha Brooke's version of Woody Guthrie's, "New Star." The lyrics are actually fairly odd but it came to us at the right time and now it has all kinds of meaning Woody never intended, I'm sure.
Of course, you didn't think I was going to leave out the Disney angle, did you? Let's start with the last movie Charlotte saw in a theater, The Princess and the Frog. There isn't a tune on the soundtrack that DOESN'T make me think of Charlotte and there was a time when I would obsessively listen to it every morning when opening up at Romp n' Roll (much to the chagrin, I'm sure, of the rest of the staff); however, I will include my favorite song from the movie, "Gonna Take You There."
How about some Little Mermaid? "Part of Your World" seems so ubiquitous; so completely over played but it's a Charlotte song so I don't think I will ever get tired of it.
Next comes Mary Poppins. I don't remember exactly when this movie became one of Charlotte's favorites but all of a sudden, it was all she wanted to watch. So here's "Let's Go Fly A Kite" which has become one of our unofficial theme songs.
Last but not least by any stretch of the imagination, here's Charlotte's favorite version of Charlotte's favorite song, Frosty The Snowman by Dan Tyminsky. We actually have a video of Charlotte dancing and sort of doing karaoke to this song. We also have video of several former NFL players singing this to her on her birthday on July 9, 2009 in the the Nelson Clinic at Children's Hospital of Richmond. THAT was something to see! Waddya know? You can! Here!
I'm sure I've left off dozens of songs and I'll probably be adding a tune here and there for days. Please feel free to add your own song if it reminds you of CJ.
Today, we invite you to have a chocolate milk toast in honor of Charlotte and if you'd like, eat some "dadoo" (Cheerios or "round cereal") and mac n' cheese.
We love you so very much, Monkey Butt and miss you every day.

"I do it mysef!"
Can't believe she's still here. And snoring lightly and peacefully at that! I think Fred Horn had it best on his Facebook post, "Who would ever have dreamed that Charlotte would do things her way!!! That is what has always made her special!!!" Rachel and Mary Poppins were saying she's waiting for Frosty The Hutt to melt before leaving. He's now Frosty The Lump.
Last night Rachel and I took turns holding her. We sang songs, rocked her, and enjoyed a quiet evening. We even got Granny to Skype in a story. We were having some issues connecting to her all day and then all of a sudden, it worked!
The lower amount of traffic through the house was a nice change. We still had plenty of people come by like Pastor Ed, Auntie 'Retta, Nurse Patty, etc... and lots of stories were still read but the people who agreed to Skype instead of come in person helped us have more "close-time" with CJ.
Today is going to be quiet as well. Rachel is sleeping in a little. I slept moderately well too which is a nice change. With all the "goodbye-ing" we've been doing, the idea of waking up and Charlotte being gone doesn't freak me out like it would have in my last lifetime. It would be just a matter-of-fact kind of thing now.
We really appreciate all the compliments people have given us concerning "how strong we are," and "I don't know how you're doing it," etc...and I hope we've had a positive (or at least calming) influence on someone but as we've said before, we haven't done it alone. Here's a story about that...
When we lived in Boone, NC, our dentist died suddenly while he and his family were on a cruise. He was a pretty popular guy in town and I was working at the local AM radio station so I got the job of talking to his wife to get details for a news story. What really touched me was how composed she was only days after he had died (this was before the funeral even happened) and how completely at peace she was even though it had to have been quite a shock. She was very nice and answered all my questions, adding answers to a few I forgot to ask, and seemed genuinely touched by the support and love she was receiving from the community. I've met a few others like her in my travels but she's the one who stands out in my mind. I give people like her at least some credit for my outlook on this situation. It's the old standing-on-the-shoulders-of-giants thing. Norman is in Ireland. (or was that, "No man is an island?")
A sense of humor doesn't hurt, either.
Gotta go look at my stubborn little girl.

A Great Day
I can't figure Charlotte out. She starts to look zombiesque and then turns around and has a great day.
We went to the Home-based Business Bazaar and she didn't seem to do that well. We made the rounds and saw a few friends and RNR members like the Flanagans, Bridget, Evan, Malia, Xavier. We ended up in the nursery where we stayed for a while. There were some very nice things for sale and I know Granny did her share to make it a successful event.
Then we made our exit and I promptly pulled something in my back somewhere between the front door and the end of the sidewalk. I have no idea what I did but it started really bothering me by the time we got to the car.
When we got home, I fed Charlotte lunch and took some Vitamine "I." Granny was merciful and took CJ over the Uncle Kolbey's house so I could get the ice going in best Dr. Anna style, "20 minutes on, 20 minutes off."
While I sat on the couch trying to find a comfortable position, I found myself watching, Farrah's Story. This is not a show to watch if you're emotionally fragile but if you want a real look into the life of a cancer patient, with all the ups and down, the side effects, the hopes, the impact on families, etc...then watch it.
It really ran me down though and I found myself slipping into Seriously Bummedsville a few times. Kinda ruined my day. I told Rachel tonight that it's my every 6-month funk which is actually happening once or twice a month these days.
Rachel went in to teach a class and lead Brithday Bashes today and I went in to help with the first ever Awesome Adventure Party! I was pretty much useless with my back/shoulder so I worked front desk and the regular crew wowed them. It was a pretty successful party from what I saw/heard.
When we got home, Charlotte was already saying she wanted to go to bed so we brought her back home and got her ready. She ended up having a great day, pooping, eating, drinking, and having lots of educational fun with Granny. She was just pooped.
Update:
Some of you have asked me to repeat Deb Harper's contact information. If you haven't seen yet, Deb did a photo shoot with us last week and took some FABULOUS pics of Charlotte (me and Roger too). She is doing a "Pictures for Charlotte" fundraiser where she will take pics of your family (wherever you wish) and give you an edited CD of the prints in exchange for a donation of your choice for Charlotte.
If you are on Facebook, you can take a look at the pics on either mine or Roger's sites. We should have some posted to the Caring Bridge site soon.
Her contact info is: Deb Harper (804) 273-0064

Update:
Aunt B and Uncle Not-So-Hairy headed off to the Hawaiian Islands this morning and Reesestrong (the doll) went with them. Can't wait to hear the stories and see the pics.
Extra positive thoughts should go out to the Reilly family as their son, Liam, who we met at the Neslon Clinic, passed away on Monday the 22nd. I say again, cancer really, really sucks!
On a more positive note, Nile, the boy with sickle cell anemia I met in the MRI room, has had a good go of things lately as he got to meet the Super Bowl Champ Steelers and received a bunch of stuff from his favorite team, the Washington Redskins. He even got a call from Santanna Moss (wide receiver). The absolute BEST thing is that he will be receiving his bone marrow transplant next week (I think)!
Here's his CB site: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/nileprice The Redskins visit (Howiette the Hoggett actually) was caught on film and his expression when he realized what was going on was priceless (no pun intended). It's part of Channel 12 About Town. I've asked Nile to forward a link to the video.
Just got notice that Rachel posted another new update to CJ's journal. Hope you don't mind the multiple posts. Don't forget to read Rachel's last post about Deb Harper's photo shoots!
CJ has had two "walks" around the neighbourhood today and is currently next door with Granny working on some of those cookies. She watched "Mary Poppins" again today and when I asked her if she would like Mary Poppins to visit again and bring her tea set, she said "Yes!"
Everything depends on her numbers but hopefully we can get it planned soon.
Tomorrow is a very long day because we're starting a new drug in the mix and they have to do some extra tests and such. Heard from the Klauers that they will be having a long day of it too. It'll be a Dad's day by the looks of it. The two families are conspiring to open a Tiki Bar at the Nelson Clinic as part of our new "Adult Life" department! :-)
So here's to everyone fighting the good fight past, present, and future. I raise a toast to you all.
Now on to an ice cream party!

An Update
First of all:
For our good friends the Klauers: This Tuesday (tomorrow) is ReeseStrong Day at the Riverbound Cafe in Mechanicsville! A percentage of all proceeds for the day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) will go to the ReeseStrong fund! Come out and eat!
Also: Next Fundraiser at Glen Allen Golf (on US1) from 7 PM-10 PM on Wednesday 5/6. Mini-golf, batting cages, and driving range! Come out for the fun and a portion of the proceeds will go to Charlotte.
Today was a nice day "off" from Romp n' Roll for me. Roger and I did go back to the clinic today to meet with Dr. Khan. We reviewed the scans again and got to talk more about possibilities for the next step(s). We still don't have any solid directions, but we will meet with Dr. Tye (neurosurgery) and Dr. Chung (radiologic oncology) on Friday along with Dr. Khan to discuss options and possible side effects of these different paths.
Meanwhile, Charlotte has had a GREAT day, complete with a much needed POOP (yes, you needed to know that).
Then we had a wonderful surprise visitor! (Pictures to follow). Our good friend Carolyn Peart has an "in" with a certain character named Mary Poppins. Charlotte wrote a letter to Mary Poppins a few weeks ago and sent it up the chimney (watch the movie). In the letter, she asked Mary Poppins to visit her. Well, Mary came for a visit today complete with her magic bag and a full tea set with scones and "tea". We had a lovely time visiting with her. Mom, Granny, and Charlotte all enjoyed her company and it was so much fun. Charlotte was a delight. The best party was putting the jelly on the scone. Then she forgot about the scone entirely and just decided to eat the jelly straight from the bowl with her fingers! Emily Post may have had something to say about it but Mary Poppins thought it was just fine. We sang songs from Mary Poppins' movie ("Let's Go Fly a Kite") as well as some of Charlotte's other favorites (Frosty the Snowman). Charlotte also loved showing Mary Poppins her "new" room and talking about her pets.
After this lovely visit, we ran a few errands with Granny and now she is at home working on a sticker picture.
It seems strange to think about our new directions and timeline. It is very difficult for me to wrap my brain around it until I have some more answers. Until then, we will enjoy our rest at home with no doctor's appointments or therapy appointments till Friday (oh, goodness, what will we do with ourselves????).
I promise to upload the Mary Poppins pictures as soon as Roger brings the camera back!
An Update from Roger
A very good day for Charlotte.
We all slept in and got up around 8. Mommy did some cleaning, daddy, tried to catch up on emails and did a little laundry. Paster Ed from St. James The Less came over for a visit and CJ seem genuinely excited to see him. She actually ran up to him and threw her arms around him. He returned the favor by giving her a squeeky duck.
Rachel eventually went to Romp n' Roll for a Birthday Bash and camp training and I went to Qdoba for the big burrito eating contest but not before stopping off at RNR to get the amazingly beautiful message board made for us by Sarah and Wendy. Thanks ladies!
I got to Qdoba about 3:30 and helped with a few of the last minute finishing touches. There were'nt too many people there and I was kind of expecting a moderately small crowd since there was no one signed up for the burrito eating contest until pretty late in the game. Boy! Was I wrong!
Slowly but surely the place started filling up with friends, RNR customers, and people I didn't know. A group of guys came in asking about the burrito eating contest and I went over to chat. They heard about it via email. Another group of VCU students heard about it at the other Broad St Qdoba, and yet another group of VCU students said they had heard about it on a website that gives dates and locations of eating contests all over.
We ended up with 42 contestants and they had to move them all outside to give them directions becuse it was too loud and crowded inside!
The contest had to be conducted in waves and I was slated to go in the last round. I knew I was sunk after the first round when one guy ate 4 burritos. I did my best but had to steal water from the little girl across the table from me to get everything down smoothly. I only finished 2 burritos but they sure were good!
There was also a table with a spinnig wheel and prizes. $1 a spin. We collected almost $600 from donations and contest entry fees. That doesn't include the 20% of sales we got. I'll report a total amount when we get the final check.
Major thanks to everyone at Qdoba including Lisa and Ibo (sp?) for having us. It was a great event and I am once again amazed by the support you've shown us.
More news:
First of all, a brief Charlotte update...she ate a great dinner and then proceeded to have ANOTHER poop. Then after a little bit of TV watching, she ended up vomiting all over me and herself. We were looking at pictures (of Mary Poppins) on the computer and fortunately we missed the laptop (by inches). Thankfully, granny came over and helped clean up the mess.
She's now cleaned up and resting in bed. She seemed ok so maybe she just overdid it at dinner tonight.
ALSO, for those of you who live in the Richmond area: Many of you have asked how you can help us, especially with the business. HERE is your opportunity: Every year, Richmond Magazine names their Best/Worst of Richmond as voted by their readers. Two years ago, Romp n' Roll was voted best Kid's Gym (last year it wasn't a category) and for the last two years we got 2nd place for Best Place to Hold a Kid's Birthday Party and Best Website. We just learned (as we were sitting in the clinic today and spied a Richmond Magazine) that the contest is going on NOW and entries are due by May 8th!!!
Ballot entries cannot be filled out online. You must buy a Richmond Magazine or go by the Richmond Magazine office to get a ballot. They must be POSTMARKED by May 8th. You also must vote for at least 20 categories for your ballot to be valid. The categories in which Romp n' Roll would be eligible this year are: Best Kid's Gym, Best Parties and Best Kid's Art Classes
Richmond Magazines are sold at Ukrops, Barnes and Noble, and other fine local retailers. Thanks for your help with this! I know we have a fabulous network so this will help us get the word out!!!
Thanks in advance for your help with this.
